The idea of card counting is that after dealing the cards a player is wanting to find out if the deck is holding high cards or low cards. A deck holding high cards is good for the player and what they are looking for. The reason for this is that the dealer must hit, they do not get a choice where as the player does. So when a deck has a lot of high cards it is likely the dealer will bust.

The most common counting system is assigning negative and positive values to cards. The lower cards having positive numbers where the higher cards have negative numbers. The player is wanting a high total number in the end as this would indicate that the deck is holding higher cards.
Card counting can be simplified, but it is the implementation of the card counting strategy that is the trick. Players who count cards have to be observant and quick in order to successful implement card counting.
